Stormsnorth of the equator rotate counterclockwise. In the southern Hemisphere, theyrotate clockwise. They don’t form on the equator or cross over it.

Tropicalcyclones form year-round in some parts of the world. Hurricanes in the NorthAtlantic develop in late summer because that’s when they find the conditionsthey need: water that has built up warmth for months, light winds high in theatmosphere, and frequent rotating storm systems.

Atlantichurricanes often get kick-started by dry winds blowing west from Africa.Surface water that’s at least 800F (270 C)evaporates and is carried upward with warm air (which rises). The rising watervapor cools and condenses to form rain and often a thunderstorm, or perhaps agroup of storms called a tropical disturbance. This system might keep risingand pulling up air from below, which other air rushes in to replace, rotatingas it does. If the system grows more, it might become a tropical depression, asystem of rain and winds circulating at up to 38 miles (61 km) per hour.

Sometropical depressions break up. But others grow to become tropical storms, withwinds of 39 to 73 miles (63---118 km) per hour. Tropical storms are significantenough that they are given proper names --- first names for either men orwomen.

Atropical storm might encounter winds from a different direction that cut offits upward growth, its rotation, or both. Or it might cross cool ocean waterand fall apart. But a handful grow into the mightiest storms on Earth ---hurricanes, with winds ranging from 74 to 150 miles (119---240 km) per hour ormore.

Theeastern Pacific Ocean will see about nine hurricanes each year, and most willdie out because they will pass over cooler waters. But it’s a different storyin the Atlantic. Continuing to absorb heat and moisture, these vast, spinning,self-sustaining storms will travel at an average speed of between 15 and 20miles (24---32 km) per hour, sometimes enduing for weeks, gaining or losingsize and strength. Like a spinning top, a hurricane will often take surprisingturns as people on land brace for its possible travel.
