Hurricanes.
TheMighty Pinwheel Takes Shape.
09/2018。
Theword “hurricane,” so vivid and forceful in English, originated in old Caribbeancivilizations. A tribe of island people known as the Taino worshipped a stormgod named Harakan. That was adapted by the Spanish as “huracan”; in English, itturned up as “furacan,” then “hurricane.”
It’snot surprising that the people who lived where hurricanes are most ferocious--- and the 16th century European sailors who explored the coasts of theseregions --- would find words to describe these vicious, long-lasting storms. But ---
Hurricanesare members of a family of storms known as tropical cyclones. They are born inthe tropics, near the equator, and take the name “cyclones” from the Greek wordfor circle, wheel, or the coil of a snake. Almost all hurricanes that strikethe U.S. originate in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean and travel northwest-wardtoward the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and America’s southeastern coast.Other hurricanes start in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico and movewestward out to sea. Sometimes a tropical cyclone will cross over land from theGulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and receive a new name; that’s how TropicalStorm Earl became Hurricane Frank in 2004.
Ahurricane in the western Pacific Ocean is called a typhoon. Tropical cyclonessouth of the equator, such as those in the Indian Ocean, are simply calledcyclones. The northern Pacific Ocean sees, on average, 44 tropical cyclones ayear. That’s the most in the world, and many of them, as typhoons, slam intoJapan, Korea, and China. The North Atlantic, which averages 10 cyclones (6 ofwhich become hurricanes), is a distant second.
