Throughout history, people havebeen attracted to the sea, It’s been their highway, their battleground, andtheir marketplace. Unfortunately, the sea is also the source of the world’smost destructive storms, and the ---

In the 13th century,Mongol ruler Kublai Khan tried twice to invade Japan by sea but failed whentyphoons struck his ships, drowning ---

Of the hundreds of Atlantichurricanes that have marauded through the Caribbean or up the East Coast of theU.S., three, each ---

The Great Hurricane of 1780 wasthe single deadliest storm in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Althoughit traveled ---

In 1900, on the shores of theGulf of Mexico, the city of Galveston, Texas, was thriving. With 40,000 people,it was America’s ---

On September 6, a hurricanecrossing Cuba prompted U.S. weather officials in far-off Washington, D.C., topost storm warnings ---

Between 8,000 and 12,000 people lost their lives, and the hurricane left Galveston little more than a flat field of rubble. The storm was a permanent setback for the city, which was quickly outshone by neighboring Houston. “I believe that a sea-wall, which would have broken the swells, would have saved much loss of both life and property.” Cline wrote in his final report. In 1902, construction began on a seawall. Although 275 people were killed in and around Galveston by another hurricane only 13 years later, the wall still stands and is today on the National Register of Historic Places.

A century after the Galveston disaster, climatologists and hurricane watchers, noting extremely warm seas, were predicting a brutal hurricane season in 2005. They were right. In July, Hurricane Dennis became the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever to form before August. It smashed into the Florida panhandle, causing $2 billion in damages. Days later, Emily broke Dennis’s strength record, becoming the only hurricane with winds at least 155 miles (249 km) ever seen in July, on its way to Mexico. In September, Rita, became the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever walloping the Taxes and Louisiana coast. Wilma paid a call in October with the lowest core air pressure ever recorded, making it the most intense Atlantic hurricane in history. It did $29 billion worth of damage, most of in southeastern Florida and the Florida Keys, and was the fourth-costliest tropical cyclone ever to hit the U.S.

As in between all of these came Katrina.

Katrina crossed Florida on August 25 and swelled over the Gulf of Mexico. By August 28, it was one of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever, with winds of 175 miles (282 km) per hour. And it was headed straight for New Orleans, a city of 445,000 residents that sat below sea level.

Experts had warned for many years that a direct hit from a hurricane would be a calamity for New Orleans. They got that right, too. Levees protecting the city failed, and on August 29, some 80 percent of New Orleans was under as much as 20 feet (6 m) of water. Despite the city’s first-ever mandatory evacuation order, many poor people were unable to leave; 30,000 people sought shelter in the Superdome sports arena, where 12 died.
