A Chinaman’s Chance
He doesn’t stand a Chinaman’s chance of winning this election.句中所谓的a Chinaman’s chance是怎样的一个机会?
这里虽用了机会一语, 实际上说的却是没有什么机会. 全句的意思是说: “他在这次选举中没有当选的希望.”
为什么这句英文要说 ‘中国人的机会’呢? 因为在十九世纪中叶, 美国西部加利福尼亚发现黄金, 於是大家一窠蜂到西部去淘金, 那些白人淘金过后所剩下的渣滓, 己经无人问津了, 才轮到当地的华工, 他们能淘到黄金的机会, 微乎其微, 所以白人就把这个叫做 “中国人的机会”.
在抗战期间, 林语堂曾语带双关的说: “Japan hasn’t got a Chinaman’s chance of winning this war. 虽是说 “日本无获胜希堂” , 同时又可解为 “日本胜利的机会不及中国.” 即照字面解为日本没有中国人一样的获胜机会.
以下是另外两个例子:
I always did want to find out what it’d be like to get friendly with you. I never had a Chinaman’s chance before – E. Calawell: Episode in Palmetto. (我确曾很想知道和你做朋友是什么味道.可是在这之前, 我一直没有这样的机会.)
