The first Catholic chapel was built in 1830, at Bras Basah Road, at the site of the old St Joseph’s Institution.

First Catholic Church

The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd was built between 1843 and 1846. It was the first permanent Catholic church in Singapore. When the church became too small to accommodate its expanding community, the Catholic Church at Queen Street was built in 1888.

第一座天主教大教堂

善牧堂初建于1843年到1846年间。随着社区不断扩大，教堂显得拥挤，于是1888年在奎因街建了这座大教堂，是新加坡第一座永久性天主教大教堂。

First Chinese Temple

Shuntian Gong (Temple of Submission to Heaven), dedicated to the earth deity Dabogong, was first built in 1796 according to an inscription inside the temple. The temple was first located at Malabar Street and is currently, after several moves, located at Geylang Lorong 29.

The Armenian Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator in Hill Street, completed in 1836 by George Coleman, is the first Christian church built in Singapore.

First Hindu Temple

The Sri Mariamman Temple, built on South Bridge Road in 1823, is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. It was established by Naraina Pillai, a government clerk from Penang, who came to Singapore with Stamford Raffles.
