First Home For Mentally Retarded
In Oct 1952 the first formal home, the New Market Children’s Home, was started for children with mental deficiency. Situated at New Market Road, it was administered by the Singapore Department of Social Welfare.

First Hospice
St Joseph’s Home was opened in 1978 in Jurong by the Catholic Welfare Services, as a home for the aged and destitute. The terminally ill can seek temporary relief there for shelter, food and medical care. It also has a chapel and gardens to provide a peaceful and serene ambience for patients.

由天主教福利服务处开办的“圣约瑟之家”于1978年在裕廊启用,主要是用来照顾老年和贫困人士。末期病人可在此获得食宿和医疗照顾。这里的教堂和花园为病人提供了一个平和、安详的环境。
First Lighthouse
Horsburgh Lighthouse, is located on Pedra Branca island, 46 km east of Changi Point, at the eastern entrance to the Singapore Straits. It was built in 1851 and named after Captain James Horsburgh, a British hydrographer and navigator, who mapped many seaways around Singapore.

First Medical School Building
When the first medical school was founded in 1905, it used the premises of a former women’s mental asylum at Sepoy Lines. In 1911, the Tan Teck Guan Building was built with an endowment from Tan Chay Yan, in memory of his father Tan Teck Guan. In 1913, the name of the medical school was changed to King Edward VII Medical School.

First Memorial Hall
The Victoria Memorial Hall, now the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall, was officially opened on 8 Oct 1905, as a memorial following the death of Queen Victoria on 22 Jan 1901. The 4-m clock tower was added a year later.
