Impact of Modernization on Women

Women were considered weak and inferior to men after the Matriarchal till the middle of the 19th century.  What makes men superior? They are generally more robust (physically stronger or looks stronger through their appearance). Thus women were given unfair treatment during this long dark period. They were not given proper education as men did. They were offered lower-class and lower-paid jobs or even no jobs. Reliance on men made women appeal weaker and most of the women have lower social status than man.

Modernization takes place gradually all over the path of human’s history. Then suddenly there is a drastic boom from 18th century. Industrialization took place in London then it ignited the ‘fire’ all over the world. Under the background of industrialization, there is a sudden shortage of labor. At that point of time, women joined the work force which usually occupied by men. It was soon discovered that women have shown great talents. They can not only compete with men in many areas but also superior than men in certain areas. As women could live independently and they played a more and more important role in the society, their social status raised. They gained the opportunity of education and they were respected by all. That is where part of the impact of modernization lies.

With modernization, there is a change in the definition of ‘power’ all over the world. Power has been more and more inclined to intelligent group of people rather than physically stronger group. Time before human technology boom, survival of human is mainly based on agriculture which involves manual labor that requires stronger male. However, with giant machines now running across the field, human are now freed from these manual works instead they focus on technology development. At the same time, modernization freed women from tedious housework. Washing machine can now automatically clean up clothes. Restaurants lie every corner of the city to offer their family’s meals. Kindergarten, Primary School, Secondary School, Junior College and University can look after their children. What else more, hospital can even look after their family members when they are ill. This is not the case in the time before 19th Century when even colds are considered serious disease which did kill many people because of no proper medication.

Modernization also bring bad impact on human, no more specifically the bad impact is more on man than women.  As the world is more and more competitive, there is a rising significant number of health problems such as heart disease, cancer etc. Scientist
