War of the Raven

Part One, Stewart.

04/2011

The procession came down the Avenida de Mayo with the sounds of singing, the voices masculine, harsh, and the tread of jackboots. And then they saw them, crowding out the traffic, the streetcars, ---

Colonel Fuentes looked at the procession, then at Stewart. ‘In Buenos Aires these days,’ Fuentes shrugged, ‘everything is imported. Even the politics.’

‘There’s a lot of it going around,’ Stewart said. At some of the tables people were standing up to give the Fascist salute. Pedestrians began to line ---

They were sitting with Hartman at a table outside Tortoni’s. They watched the marchers come by like a slow black tide with ---

‘Bueno, Senor Stewart. You see how it is with us now, even here on the de Mayo,’ Fuentes said, finishing his drink and signalling the waiter ---

‘I am impressed, Mi Coronel, at your arranging all this for my benefit,’ Stewart said gesturing toward where the procession had passed.

Fuentes chuckled and glanced over at Hartman. ‘You might be surprised what can be arranged here,’ he smiled. ‘Still, this is nothing.’ ---

Stewart looked at him. ‘I’ve seen Brown Shirts before, Colonel. Is that what you want in Argentina?’

The waiter brought them fresh glasses, a bottle of Canadian rye and another of Italian vermouth. Hartman drank his rye neat, with a little shudder, ---

‘How are you calling this?’ Fuentes asked, smacking his lips. He was tall and thin, with olive skin and a strong conquistador’s nose perching over ---

‘It’s called a “Manhattan”. For women, you add a cherry.’

‘Ah, si, the Manhattan. Most good. Always something new from the North Americans,’ Fuentes grinned, turning to Hartman. ‘Is this not so, Don Geraldo?’

‘You can count on it, Colonel,’ Hartman winked. ‘A few more of those and you’ll be a general.’
